NOW MAGAZINE

Katie Stelmanis is a Canadian musician and has been making music her whole life. First as a student of piano and voice, then as a guitar player in Toronto's riot grrl trio galaxy, and now as an art-pop composer who falls somewhere in between.

Stelmanis is known for combining layers of luscious vocals, rhythmic piano riffs, and electronic beats, pulses and undercurrents, creating complex pop songs not intended for easy listening. She released her debut album titled "Join Us" with the Blocks Recording Club in January 2008 to critical acclaim in Canada, though it remained unnoticed in most other parts of the world. However, a guest appearance on Fucked Up's latest album "chemistry of Common Life," a new 7" with Vice records, and support gigs with Iron and Wine, Jens Lekman, Junior Boys and Final Fantasy should help to garner peoples attention - her second album will be released in the near future, and if all goes well might make it to people's music players beyond those in her home town!
